Sometimes the failure isn’t a result of a lack of willpower or determination, it’s biological. As we age our hormones, specifically estrogen, levels drop which impacts multiple areas of our bodies including our metabolism which plays a key role in weight loss.

One form of estrogen called estradiol decreases as women age and head towards menopause. This hormone helps to regulate metabolism and body weight. It’s these lower levels of estradiol that may lead to weight gain.

The most common weight gain occurs in the abdomen and around the organs. This type of fat is known as visceral fat and can be very dangerous. Some of the medical conditions linked to high levels of visceral fat include:

As changing estrogen levels happen, older women may become less active and have less muscle mass, which means they burn fewer calories during the day.

This becomes a vicious cycle: low energy > little exercise > weight gain > even lower energy > even less exercise > even MORE weight gain.
